1983. .........After an hour or so of walking at a good clip they stopped for a moment. Clay picked up a tiny handful of snow from a rock, ate it, then he picked up another and offered it to Leila. Greg did likewise.

"Just this handful, no more. It's not good to eat snow with this cold, it lowers the body temperature, but you would surely already know that, Nurse Lane," he said, arching an eyebrow sardonically. Leila didn't answer, her mouth was full of freezing cold snow, which quenched her burning thirst but made her shiver. She glared at him. He wanted to degrade her as a nurse as well as a person? Who did that arrogant, conceited dummy think he was? He could think whatever he wanted, she certainly didn't have to explain herself to him.

They continued on again.

.....Leila didn't know how long she'd been there, she had lost awareness of time and of her body. She felt herself floating in nothingness, in that dark, silent see of black rubber.

They opened the door and she was blinded by the light from the hallway. They said something and it seemed strange to her to hear a human voice. She thanked God, realizing that she hadn't lost her hearing. It must have been another torture method used in that house of madness. She felt a strange sense of pleasure from human touch, even if it was with her jailers. She would have wanted to hug the guard, but she no longer had the strength to move. They literally dragged her to the interrogation room.

Again the man with the mustache; always him. She was starting to crave the conversation.......
